    History of Plastiras Lake

Plastiras Lake is located at about 25 km western of Karditsa, at an altitude of 800m. It is found 325 km away from Athens and 250 km from Thessaloniki, and is characterized as one of the most easily accessible destinations in Greece. The scenery is breathtaking, as the lake is surrounded by high leafy mountains, and the area is considered to be a "paradise" for all the lovers of nature as it provides possibilities for climbing, fishing, and generally for practicing all kinds of mountain-sports, and of course trekking in the forest. The main motive for someone to go on this trip is primarily visiting a new place, but also getting away from routine, limitations and stress of everyday life.

Lake Plastiras was created at a location where river "Tavropos" formerly existed, whirling and flowing slowly to the south, to meet Achelous River. This area was called "Nevropolis" probably because plenty of deer once lived there (the word Nevros means the newborn deer). At about 1928 an eminent, at Karditsa and the rest of Greece as well, man, the General of the army Nikolaos Plastiras grasped the idea for the construction of a dam that would solve the irrigation problem of Thessaly's field, the problem of water-supply that Karditsa and other communities had, but also the problem of generation of electricity by taking advantage of the force of the water. However, his idea took shape many years later, due to the many sufferings Greece went through, during the following years.

The idea blossomed in the 50's, when the realization of his vision started. The original idea was about the construction of an earthen dam in another position (almost near Neochori), but eventually the place 'Kakavakia' and the construction of a concrete one were chosen. The construction of the dam was completed in 1960, and the filling of the reservoir with water of Tavropos' tributaries from seasonal streams, started then.

This is how Lake Tavropos- later renamed into Lake Plastiras- was created at an altitude of 800 m., occupying acreage of almost 25 km², 12 km long, with a width of 4km and a depth of about 60m. The dam's length and height is 220 m. and 83 m. respectively. For the creation of the lake a sufficient amount of the residents' of the surrounding villages estates (fields, farmhouses etc.), was taken. However, in long term all these were returned twice or three times as much.

So, with Mother Nature's help, an astonishing scenery was created, which little by little started being discovered by people, and as a result not only the plain but also the whole highland area started being profited by the lake.

From the early 1980's, nature and popular culture's lovers discover the beauty and the uniqueness of this area. The many investments from entities and individuals, particularly during the last decade, turned the area of the lake into a popular tourist destination and a draw for thousands of visitors during the four seasons of the year. The businesses of the area provide high-quality facilities and offer to visitors a unique experience of getting away of daily routine.
